Detailed notes
The fine print is here.
Michigan Fire Alarm Contractor License
LARA's Bureau of Construction Codes (BCC) issues the Michigan fire alarm contractor license — not the State Police or Fire Marshal Division. Under the Skilled Trades Regulation Act (Act 407 of 2016), you need this license to install, alter, repair, service, or maintain fire alarm systems anywhere in Michigan.
A NICET Level II Qualified Person Is Required Before You Can Hold This License
Before you can hold a fire alarm contractor license, you must designate a Fire Alarm Specialty Technician (FAST) who holds NICET Level II certification in Fire Alarm Systems Technology (MCL 339.5721). The FAST exam is administered by PSI and required at the individual level. One FAST can only qualify one contractor license — you cannot share the qualifying person across multiple entities.
License Fee and Triennial Renewal
- License fee: $300 (3-year cycle)
- Licenses expire December 31 on a 3-year cycle
- Renewal deadline: March 1 of the following year — the license is voided if the March 1 deadline is missed, requiring full relicensure (there is no late-fee option)
How to Apply
Submit your application through LARA BCC at michigan.gov/lara/bureau-list/bcc. Include the qualifying FAST's current NICET Level II certificate with your application.
Penalties for Unlicensed Installation
LARA BCC — not the State Fire Marshal — enforces Act 407 of 2016. Penalties are tiered: first offense is a misdemeanor (up to $500 or 90 days); second is a misdemeanor (up to $1,000 or 1 year); subsequent violations are a felony (up to $25,000 or 5 years imprisonment).
