Detroit Contractor License
The City of Detroit Buildings, Safety Engineering and Environmental Department (BSEED) requires contractors to register before performing construction work within city limits. A valid State of Michigan contractor license is a prerequisite.
Requirements
- State License: Must hold a current, valid State of Michigan Contractors License
- Insurance: General liability and workers' compensation insurance are not required by LARA for licensure, but are recommended
- Application Fee: $46 registration fee (Residential Builders)

Scope of Work
Registered contractors can obtain building permits and perform construction work within Detroit city limits. The city registration covers residential builders, alterations, and maintenance contractors.

- By mail: 5-10 business days
- Payment: Cash, credit card (Visa/MC/Discover), money order, or cashier's check payable to "Treasury City of Detroit"
