Detailed notes
The fine print is here.
Michigan Boiler Contractor License
You need a LARA Bureau of Construction Codes (BCC) boiler contractor license to install, alter, or repair boilers in Michigan. Working without one is a misdemeanor on the first offense and a felony (up to $25,000 fine or 5 years) by the third offense under the Skilled Trades Regulation Act (2016 PA 407, MCL 339.5601).
Michigan Uses a Tiered Boiler License System
Michigan divides boiler contractor licenses into Installer classes (1B, 2B, 3B) and Repairer classes (3R/Class III, 4R/Class IV) based on boiler pressure and capacity. You apply for the specific class matching your scope of work — a Class 1B (high-pressure steam) license and a Class 3B (hot water heating) license are separate applications and fees.
Fees and Annual Renewal
Licenses expire December 31 each year — renewal is annual, not triennial.
- Initial license fee: $100 per class (paid to LARA BCC)
- Annual renewal fee: $100
- Late renewal fee: $100 additional if renewal is filed more than 60 days after December 31
- Exam fee: $100 paid directly to PSI at scheduling (separate from LARA fees)
If the license lapses more than 3 years, you must reapply and retest from scratch.
Exam and Application Process
Pass the written exam through PSI, available at five Michigan testing centers six days per week. Submit your BCC-313 application with supporting experience documentation through LARA BCC. Contact: LARA-BCC-Licensing@michigan.gov, (517) 241-9316.
What Unlicensed Work Costs You
MCL 339.5601 is tiered: first offense is a misdemeanor (up to $500 fine or 90 days); second is a misdemeanor (up to $1,000 or 1 year); third and beyond is a felony (up to $25,000 or 5 years imprisonment).
