Michigan Asbestos Abatement Contractor License

Michigan's asbestos contractor license is a staffing-and-paperwork license as much as a technical one. MIOSHA expects the accredited people to already be in place, the workers' compensation record to be current, and the employee list to match the people who will actually perform the work.

What has to be ready

  • Accredited workers and supervisors: MIOSHA says the workers and supervisors performing asbestos abatement must already hold the required accreditations, and the contractor must keep at least one accredited contractor or supervisor on staff.
  • Workers' compensation: The application requires a Michigan workers' compensation certificate issued within the last 30 days, unless the business qualifies for a Notice of Exclusion.
  • Employee list: The filing includes an alphabetical list of all workers and supervisors who will work with asbestos.
  • Out-of-state businesses: Foreign corporations need Michigan authority to transact business and a certificate of good standing.

Fees and the real late-renewal problem

  • Type I initial fee (1-4 employees): $200.
  • Type I renewal fee (1-4 employees): $100.
  • Type II initial fee (5 or more employees): $400.
  • Type II renewal fee (5 or more employees): $300.
  • Renewal cycle: Annual.
  • Late renewal rule: If MIOSHA does not receive the renewal at least 30 days before expiration, it treats the filing as an initial application and charges the higher initial fee instead of the lower renewal fee.

Timing and operating risk

MIOSHA tells applicants to allow 15 business days for processing. That means the 30-day file-early rule matters in practice, not just on paper. If the staffing list or insurance certificate is stale, the company can end up paying the initial fee structure again.

Scope and penalties

A licensed Michigan asbestos abatement contractor may perform asbestos removal or encapsulation work covered by the Asbestos Abatement Contractors Licensing Act. MIOSHA does publish limited incidental-work carveouts for certain already licensed trades, but those are narrow and should be checked against the current program materials before anyone relies on them.

The contractor application and MIOSHA materials also warn that unlicensed asbestos abatement activity can be subject to penalties up to $10,000 per day.
