Renewals are processed by the Growth Management Department's Building Inspection Division — submit the Certificate of Competency Renewal Application (PDF) with current General Liability and Workers' Compensation insurance certificates (or exemption).
Certificate cards expire September 30 each year; late fees apply to renewals received after September 30 — confirm the current per-category renewal amount with the Building Inspection Division.
Applications must be returned by mail to 300 S. Adams Street Box B-28, Tallahassee, FL 32301, or emailed to Permits@Talgov.com per the official application packet.
Inactive renewal is available by calling (850) 891-7001, option 2, then option 4 prior to payment.
State Certified DBPR contractors are recognized statewide and do not need the local Certificate of Competency. State Registered DBPR contractors (locally-competent only) must maintain current General Liability and Workers' Compensation insurance with the city.
There is no city or county business tax to renew alongside — both the City of Tallahassee business license tax (repealed FY2017–18) and the Leon County business tax (repealed) no longer apply.
