Renew your City of Melbourne Business Tax Receipt online or in person. The main BTR page is https://www.melbourneflorida.org/Government/Departments/Financial-Services/Business-Tax-Receipts. For in-person or mail renewal, contact the Revenue Division of the Financial Services Department at (321) 608-7038 or visit 900 East Strawbridge Avenue, Melbourne, FL 32901.
Annual BTR fiscal year runs October 1 – September 30. Renewal opens July 1 each year. Receipts expire September 30 — renew before that date to avoid delinquency penalties.
Delinquency penalties begin October 1 per FL Statute 205.053(1) and escalate monthly through January, capped by statute. FL Statute 205.053(3) imposes an additional statewide civil penalty if the business tax remains unpaid for an extended period after initial notice of tax due — this is self-executing and does not require the City of Melbourne to expressly invoke it in local ordinance.
Any business whose profession is regulated by the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) must provide a copy of the current, active state license before the BTR will be issued or renewed. Businesses operating under a Fictitious Name (DBA) must also provide their Florida Fictitious Name Registration.
Home-based businesses: permitted only for phone, mail, and bookkeeping activities. Businesses that employ people or attract customers or vehicular traffic to the home are not permitted as home occupations under Melbourne's rules.
A separate Brevard County Local Business Tax Receipt is also required. Apply through the Brevard County Tax Collector (https://www.brevardtaxcollector.com/services/business-tax-receipts/ or BTExpress portal at https://county-taxes.net/brevard/btexpress). Contact Brevard County Tax Collector at (321) 264-6969 to confirm current fee and requirements.
Per Florida Statute 205.065, a DBPR-regulated contractor who has already paid local business tax to the Florida county or municipality where their permanent business location or branch office is maintained is exempt from a Melbourne BTR for work or services performed on a temporary or transitory basis.
